Terms of Use

Terms of Use, co-curated by Megan Ganey and Kadie Nugent, ran Oct. 7-17, 2019, in the Art & Design Gallery at The University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS.

Video work, objects, and performances questioning the viability of our continued obsession with Instagram were interspersed with hands-on programming open to everyone. The exhibition changed daily, working against the clock, as the algorithm of the show was rewritten and mended until Oct. 17 when the exhibition closed.

During the run of the exhibition Kadie held her studio inside the gallery to mend and create a new algorithm using a sewing machine. Viewers were invited to engage in conversations with Nugent “Like and Share” (Oct. 8) and “FAQ” (Oct. 15). These conversations transformed into shared studio time where visitors helped mend the algorithm and proposed new realities with ideas or stitches on sewing machines alongside Kadie.

Using screenshots of Instagram posts photocopied on colored paper, Megan and Kadie, with Sun Sanders and Wes Thurston, recorded performative installations to consider the ways in which user-created content is posted and curated within the rules of the platform. The performances exist as the videos below.
